October Selection

No, I'm not talking about the Federal Election. As it's the middle of the month, we should start thinking about our next book selection. I know that everyone is keenly focused on the current book, but we have to keep moving forward. Otherwise we'll die.

The process will go like this: leave a comment to this post with your selection. You have until next Monday to throw your two cents in. At that time, a poll will be set up in the side bar and the voting will commence, ending on the 30th when our next book is selected.

The winning book will be celebrated as an Olympic athlete might, hosting SNL, going on Oprah and eventually read by the masses. Good luck to all candidates!

My pick for October: The Flying Troutmans by Miriam Toews. This book was just released in September and is being touted as an incredible read; Toews is funny and poignant and just all around great. Check out a review at http://www.cbc.ca/arts/books/story/2008/09/09/f-toews-troutmans.html

I'm going to suggest some non-fiction -- I was thinking of Noah Richler or Ted Conover, but I was thinking instead of Joan Didion's The Year of Magical Thinking. It's been recommended to me by five different people so it's about time I read it... so we should to.

Though I've failed miserably at reading the current selection I'm still going to throw in my thoughts and suggest Gargoyle. It's already on the Globe Bestseller list as well as the NY Times, but I like the idea that it hinges on an interpretation of Dante's Inferno.

Is Gargoyle (Andrew Davidson) the one where the dude was paid $1 million to write? Or did you pick it because you got a free copy at the Random House event?

Ahh funny guy! No I didn't get a free copy, Jen just sold it very well! They've sold rights to 19 countries, so I think even if they did pay $1 million they're probably going to get that back...
